Book Editing

Our only rule is there are no rules. While certain guidelines can be used to create and evaluate “good” writing, it is also true that no two authors are alike, no two stories are quite the same, and no two readers will experience the story—or its author—like the other. There is room for anything in fiction but rules.

Here’s what we do believe in.

  1. An author should never compromise her artistic integrity.
  2. Communication 101: Say what you mean and mean what you say.
  3. There are dozens of style guides. Choose one. Any one. Just be consistent.
  4. Language can always be precise and concise, and never dull.
  5. Most importantly: Love your manuscript. Otherwise, why bother?

  • Sample Edit: $15 up to 2,500 words

A sample edit of your work allows us to try each other out. You can choose up to 2,500 words from any area of your manuscript, whether you’d like us to review your story’s “hook” (first 5 pages) or a particularly rough chapter from the middle of your novel–it’s up to you! If you decide to hire us to edit your full manuscript, this amount is deducted from your bill.

  • Traditional Edit: $20 per 1,000 words (Minimum: $1000)

The Traditional Edit is what’s widely used for hiring a book editor when your dollars really count. What it includes:

  • Copy editing  to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, style and usage, ensuring you “say what you mean and mean what you say.” We work to polish your manuscript so it’s publishable and error-free, but we also understand that good grammar does not always equal good writing, especially in fiction. It’s important to us to maintain your voice and artistic integrity. In our book, consistency is King.
  • Proofreading:  Once the main edit is complete, a final check of the manuscript fixes any lingering errors and typos. This step readies your manuscript for agent submissions and/or digital formatting.
  • Premium Edit: $30 per 1000 words (Minimum: $2200)

With a Premium Edit, we help take your story to the next level, ensuring your manuscript is engaging, marketable, and well written. What it includes:

  • Developmental suggestions  throughout, with a special emphasis on pacing, voice, characterization, and continuity. Includes chapter-by-chapter critiques and rewriting suggestions. We’ll leave “reader reactions” too, so you can see where we laughed, cried, grew anxious, or got confused. You won’t have to guess what a reader might think; we’ll let you know.
  • Substantive line editing  to fix for awkward sentence and paragraph structure, word/phrase repetition, and tense or point-of-view inconsistencies.

  • Just Proofreading: $13 per 1,000 words

While there is a certain appeal to being the first editor to work on your manuscript, we also love it when we’re last; it means we get to submit the most polished version of your work. Yeah!!

We offer proofreading services for authors whose manuscripts have been previously edited by another editor. Proofreading should be in addition to full manuscript editing, never as a substitution. Click here to learn more about our proofreading services.
